Since 1 December 2023, Hannes Gernandt is the new Junior Professor for Port Hamiltonian Systems in Wuppertal. We are delighted to have gained an expert in port Hamiltonian systems and their interdisciplinary applications for the IMACM.

Port Hamiltonian systems extend the classical energy-based modelling of Hamiltonian systems by including dissipation and by making the system open via ports. These enable interaction between several port Hamiltonian systems. With energy as the "lingua franca", systems from different physical domains in particular can be coupled while maintaining the port Hamiltonian structure.

In recent years, it has become apparent that not only are many dynamic system models of Port-Hamiltonian structure, but also that this special structure offers advantages for their analysis, numerics, optimisation and simulation, as well as for the control of complex systems.

Hannes Gernandt studied mathematics at the Ilmenau University of Technology, where he also completed his doctorate in mathematics in 2021. After working at the Institute of Mechanics and Marine Technology in Hamburg, he did his postdoc in the control of electrical energy networks as part of the DFG SPP1984 at the Technical University of Berlin. Since November 2022, he advises the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Energy IEG on modelling and operational optimisation of sector-coupled energy systems and geothermal storage systems.
