In 2016, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, the Wuppertalian entrepreneur and patron Dr. Jörg Mittelsten Scheid (Vorwerk companies) donated 500.000 EUR to the Bergische Universität Wuppertal to fund international guest professorships in all schools of the university. For the winter term 2020/21, Prof. Dr. W.H.A. Schilders, full professor for “Scientific Computing in the Industry” at the Technical University in Eindhoven was assigned as fourth Dr. Mittelsten Scheid guest professor in the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
Wil studied mathematics at Radboud University Nijmegen and received his doctorate from Trinity College Dublin. Before he went to the TU Eindhoven in 2010, he worked in industry for 30 years, at Philips and NXP Semiconductors. Wil is an expert in the development of mathematical methods that are used in simulations of products and processes in industry. He has been working for many years in various functions on advancing mathematics as a key technology and emphasizing its importance for industry and society. Wil Schilders has impressively shown that progress in mathematics is often driven by external impulses, such as unsolved problems in industry, for example, which require the development of new mathematical tools and concepts in order to be solved, thus opening up new areas of research.
During his guest professorship, Wil will give insights into his work in various events, including outreach activities in downtown Wuppertal at different locations like a school, a church and the city hall.
